creative clinical supervision

A creative approach to clinical supervision which intends to support you in the breadth and depth of your professional life. Creative clinical supervision has the potential to empower you in your practice, foster growth in the deeper dimension of your life, and ultimately positively impact the lives of your clients and the teams and organisations that you work within.

“I see supervision as a hologram in which each moment contains everything that needs to be embodied, felt and known. The different worlds of the client, supervisee, supervisor and the outside world are simultaneously mirroring and co-creating each other. Supervision offers us the opportunity to become present to that moment of awareness, to slow down so that the wound, disturbance or disconnection that seems to be breaking everything and us apart is, instead, the road back home.”

- Joan Wilmot

Clinical supervision as it exists within the helping and healing professions is not just an ethical and professional necessity, nor should it simply serve as a functional and technical analysis of the supervisee’s work; it is at a fundamental level about an ongoing commitment to the work of human relationships.

Through my experience as a clinical supervisor and my own clinical supervision across my years working as a therapist, I have come to understand creative clinical supervision as a soulful practice; where as supervisors we have the privilege of honouring the courage, vulnerability, commitment and life of our fellow professionals and the people that they support and work alongside.

This understanding is rooted in the intimacy of the supervision space and the potential it holds for exploring the oftentimes ineffable encounters of client and supervisee, and supervisee and supervisor. Through exploring and revealing what exists most deeply in the lives of others, we reveal more of what exists within ourselves. As a result, we might all – client, supervisee, and supervisor - emerge downstream from this process having discovered more about our needs, our perspectives, our fears, our dreams and what it is that we are each contributing. Within this living process, we might all find ways to become more responsible collaborators in our work and in our community, and hopefully play our small but significant part in contributing greater healing, growth, balance and love to the continued unfolding of our world.

My approach

I believe a person-centred approach to clinical supervision to be most resonant and useful. It is an approach that I have intuitively grown with in my practice as a therapist and arises from a deep trust that the client holds within them the potential to navigate and resolve their internal and external conflicts without overarching direction and interpretation from the therapist. In this same way, person-centred supervision leans into the understanding that the supervisee holds within them the potential and the resources to grow effectively into their role.

Just as the therapist is not seen as an expert on the clients experience, but rather a collaborator within the therapeutic relationship; the supervisor is seen as a collaborator, creating an environment, and participating in a relationship which serves to facilitate the personal growth and professional development of the supervisee – encouraging and supporting them to harness and trust their own creativity, wisdom, resources and experience so as to be of greater service to their clients.

My intention within this work is to be committed to holding the soulful thread that exists between client, supervisee and supervisor, and to do so with acceptance, openness, compassion, and presence. Within this intention lives a deep respect for the irreducible spark of life in the heart of each person, which is oriented towards healing, growth and wholeness, its journey one of soulful and heartfelt meaning making.
