Luke brinsford
I have come to know a thread that runs through my life. It leads me to the edge of necessary thresholds, moves me towards experiences of intimacy and joy, and guides me through life’s myriad traumas, tests and challenges. It is a thread which weaves itself steady and true, that is felt and known at the centre of my heart and expressed most fully when in authentic relationship with others. My work, as I see it, is an unfolding offer rising from the depths of my lived story, responding to the shifting currents of a complex and beautiful world.
My journey has been a continual invitation to be shaped by the initiation that is life, so I might show up as best as I can to be in service to something greater than myself. To be in service to the hard and necessary work of healing, growth and transformation – for myself, for others, and for the world. To be alongside others as they navigate their healing journey and awaken to the deeper potentials of their life. This is the thread.
Throughout my life I have been fortunate to have found many things that work for me. I’m grateful to have tried things that haven’t worked for me, but that have helped me along my way. I have discovered many things that matter to me. I have let things go that once mattered but no longer do. Some things that have mattered to me for a long time, still matter and maybe always will.
I have found a steady and supportive love in my closest relationships. I have found a wild and welcoming presence in nature. I carry a deep appreciation for solitude and celebration, for stories and circles, symbols and the imagination, and for the natural beginnings and endings that each life holds.
Being in authentic relationship to others and nurturing mutual meaningful connections is the touchstone of my work and the transformational ingredient in the soulful practices of creative therapy and supervision. I have learned from experience that a committed companionship is essential to the healing journey.
I am blessed to have had companions along the way who have been steady in their generosity, belief and support. I am blessed to have had the guidance of teachers and mentors who have invited new perspectives, shared their wisdom, and challenged me to grow. I am blessed to have learned from each and every person that I have had the privilege and honour to work alongside.
I have learned that as much as specific techniques and theoretical knowledge are useful, the truest change occurs when we find the courage to fully embrace our aliveness with one another. When we feel secure enough to make mistakes, trusting in the wisdom that those mistakes will bring. When we feel understood and accepted in who we are and who we are growing to be. When in the presence of another we grow in greater trust of ourselves and our capacities to move the dial beyond what limits us. When we can be held and witnessed in the shedding of our skin. When we can boldly bring definition to the landscape of our imagination and collaborate in bringing new, vital and creative energy into the world. When compassion and love are known as natural conditions of the heart, that put us directly in touch with our innate power, wisdom and nobility.
my core values
Creativity is the lifeforce of new ideas, new conversations, and new growth. Creativity cultivates the richness of the imagination and encourages us to move out from the safety of what is known to meet the new horizons of what is possible. Creativity unfolds the image at the centre of our hearts and brings us into intimate relationship with our inherent goodness and our innate aliveness.

Authenticity is living close to the truth and in alignment with our values. It is the practice of taking responsibility for who we are, how we relate, and how we can come to know and express our gifts in a meaningful way. Authenticity is a vehicle for authentic connection with others. It is a boon for openness, honesty and acceptance.
authenticity
Courage is taking the first step that we don’t want to take. Our healing and growth requires our courage, so that we might hold our own and be present to the hardships that life presents. Courage inspires. It rises from the heart and can light a fire in the hearts of others. Courage is to meet the call that rises from within which asks for a greater participation in life.
courage
Compassion is seeing the world with open eyes and welcoming it with an open heart. Compassion knows that our struggles and our suffering are intimately connected to the struggles and suffering of others. Holding compassion for self and for others creates a fertile ground for healing. Whether in our solitude, or in our togetherness with others, compassion amplifies kindness, understanding, respect and love.

Love is the binding and guiding energy that gives depth and dignity to authentic human relationship. Being open hearted is a soulful practice that invites and transmits kindness, generosity and understanding. There is nothing more precious, or paramount, than nurturing our capacity to give love, receive love, and to be love.

why i do this work
There is a world that is churning all around us. Collectively we lurch from one crisis to the next, struggling to stay afloat in a tumultuous sea of profound problems, impossible divisions and intensifying conflicts. Our systems of politics, education, energy, finance, and health no longer seem fit for purpose. Human health is declining, and we suffer from an epidemic of loneliness as we become further disconnected from each other, from nature, and from the source of our being. The health of the planet itself is at a tipping point. The complexity of the issues we face, on both the collective and individual levels, appear to be so vast that they are almost mythic in scope. There is no single solution, or simple way through.
Yet, all things are interconnected and the opportunity in the challenge for humanity is that we bring our deepest resources to the fore. That we find a way to harness our imagination, our unique gifts, and the power of the spirit that brings us to life. That we nurture our deepest longings and our desire for truth, meaning, connection, and love; and that we pursue our natural inclination toward healing, growth, and wholeness. That we practice the art of living soulfully and discover new ways of being together that enable us to evolve as an integral and beautiful part of an interconnected universe and transform the world that we live in. For me, this is ‘the work’.
That transformation, as I understand it, starts with the individual and moves from the inside out. We are responsible for the inner change that must precede the change in our outer circumstances. All experience tells us that we are not alone in this, that there will always be others who have walked the path and who will meet us at the edge. So, I continue to craft my small piece of ‘the work’ and deepen and widen my intentional offer of service – which is, to be alongside others as they craft their own souls, harness their unique power and gifts, and shape their deepest realities. In these in-between-times, this is hard and necessary work. It requires our courage and commitment, and willingness to reimagine a way of living and relating, fully and wholeheartedly, in a world which desperately needs our belonging to it.
